The researchers in the Journal of Oncology (Clinical Oncology) in its issue dated March 20 that the rate of disease death among black women more than among white women. Said Dr. Dawn Hershman told Reuters: "It is interesting that there are also differences in survival rates (among men who develop breast cancer").
She added "Through understanding the similarities between men and women in terms of differences in survival rates .. perhaps better understand the reasons for these differences and step closer to a solution of (Multi) inequality in survival rates between whites and blacks."
Hershman and colleagues from the Columbia group in New York, the factors influencing outcomes among 456 white men and 34 black men diagnosed with breast cancer identified in the database of medical care.
The average age of patients was 76 years. Hirschman explained that "breast cancer in men is a disease of the elderly is mainly a type of cancer is often sensitive to hormones."
The group stated in a report that prospects for the arrival of patients from the men to the advanced stages of the disease increased among blacks than among whites as well as the possibilities of increasing the size of tumors and the potential spread of disease to the lymph nodes, poorly differentiated tumors, and the risk of other illnesses.
After accounting for clinical and demographic factors were less likely to convert black men to a medical oncologist by 48 percent and likely to receive chemotherapy by 56 percent compared with white men.
During the follow-up for about five years, about half of the men died, and the researchers found that the probability of death of black men because the disease exceeding 3.29 times the rate of white men.
Hirschman said that "efforts should be made to ensure that patients receive breast cancer treatment, according to according to the criteria (known) and complete (treatment"). "The current data indicate that this is not the case."
